Nordic Ministerial Statement on Maritime Resilience and Sustainable Transition

Published 22-10-2026

On the 22nd October 2026, a Nordic Statement by ministers from Denmark, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Norway, Finland and Sweden on Maritime Resilience and Sustainable Transition was launched at the Nordic Maritime Summit in Copenhagen.

The statement covers crucial areas for the Nordic Maritime  collaboration,  underlining that maritime decarbonization and societal resilience must go hand in hand.

With shipping as one of the historical, present and future core pillars for Nordic growth and sustainable transport, the Nordic countries agree to work for a public-private Nordic Sustainable Shipping Forum, which will be the first of its kind.  One of the important joint efforts will be the realization of green shipping corridors in the Nordic region, and thereby also to provide coordinated Nordic approaches to exploring financing solutions and sustainable maritime fuels initiatives.

With the Ministerial statement the Nordic countries also commit to assess at national levels, how public ferry tenders can include requirements for reduced greenhouse gas emission, and it acknowledges special circumstances for ice-classed ships.

The statement highlights the Nordic political will to address the Nordic region’s potential and need to collaborate for a more sustainable maritime industry – and thereby to ensure better regional maritime resilience in uncertain geopolitical times.

Last but not least, Nordic countries call for coordinated Nordic support for an ambitious global agreement on greenhouse gas reductions from shipping at the International Maritime Organization.
